Rain

We’re hoping that the 15.5 mm in the holding paddock might grow enough winter herbage on the harder country to counteract the rain damage to dry grass, but the 4mm – 12mm over our other paddocks is not going to be helpful in the short term. Small falls of rain on dry grass ‘wash the guts out of it’, causing an overnight deterioration in feed quality.

We had already started feeding out supplementary lick a month or so ago, but intake will be higher from now until we get good vegetation growing rain, which could be December or January….if we’re lucky, because there are no guarantees with rain in our country.

These small falls prior to summer and warmer days are supposed to be good for our perennial grasses like Mitchell grass though, prompting their root systems to start preparing for summer rain.
