Hi, I’m Wendy and I live with my family, on 250 000 acres of mulga, hills, boree and mitchell grass in western Queensland.
We run a self replacing flock of merino sheep for wool and meat, and some combination of mainly Shorthorn Droughtmaster cross cows for raising calves.
I’m steadily working on a pictorial record of both the flora and fauna found here, and am passionate about managing our various different landscapes to maintain or improve biodiversity.
I like to share what we’re doing, and why because so many people don’t get the chance to see where their food/fabric comes from. If you’ve got a question, please ask it. If I can’t answer it, someone else might.
Occasionally I share my opinion. You’re welcome to agree or not, so long as it’s all polite.
Occasionally I share a recipe too, because I enjoy cooking and feeding people. Food can be a language of love/affection/caring.
On the list of things I love….taking photos, reading, chocolate (from the freezer), listening to the yarn tellers, the night sky, enthusiasm, humor, train travel, trying something new if I’m eating out, looking at sheep and cattle (ours or other people’s, I’m not fussy), my milking cows, Milo made with Jersey milk and cream, chooks, dust in photos, my family, mustering well behaved cattle, mustering sheep (they’re nearly always well behaved), convincing badly behaved cattle that they need to change their ways and did I mention Cadbury chocolate?
Things I do not love…..lambs in the garden, chooks in the garden, cows in the garden, snakes in the garden, my mustering car catching on fire, my mustering car breaking down mid-muster, staying home when fun stuff is happening in the paddock, wild dogs, wild pigs, crows, the schoolroom, anything low fat, boiled veggies, empty chocolate packets (especially after a rough day in the schoolroom), being asked what someone was wearing…or what they look like…..or what their name is.
Things I think I’d like if I tried them….snow, roads to previously unvisited parts of Australia, any roads in New Zealand, or Canada, or the UK, or America or…., several good seasons in a row.
